UV disinfection is popular around the globe for drinking water treatment, largely due to the fact that, unlike chlorine or ozone (bromate), it doesn't produce harmful disinfection by-products, and it doesn't alter the taste or odour of the water. Pressure from Governments and environmentalists to eliminate unwanted chemicals from the ecosystem, whilst providing pathogen free water, is also driving interest in UV disinfection  for drinking water treatment. Even at low doses, UV provides a 4-log inactivation of chlorine-resistant pathogens such as Cryptosporidium and Giardia. Thousands of drinking water sites globally use UV disinfection for water treatment.  UV disinfection of water is ideal for disinfection, water sanitation and water treatment of all incoming water to ensure contamination is stopped at the source. UV disinfection is ideal for drinking water as it doesn't produce unwanted disinfection by-products which can affect the taste, odour or colour of the water. UV disinfection is widely accepted as a viable, environmentally friendly water treatment and water sanitation alternative to chlorination, as microorganisms resistant to chlorine have no defense against UV. The use of UV disinfection in drinking water is now regarded as an important step in the removal of potentially pathogenic micro-organisms. In some cases, such as when treating pure spring water, a simple filter followed by UV  disinfection system is all that is needed. In other cases, when complex carbon filtration water treatment is used, UV disinfection acts as an additional defense. It is known that some micro-organisms flourish on active carbon filters, which themselves become a source of contamination. UV disinfection kills these unwanted intruders, stopping contamination at the source.

Berson InLine UV System

Berson InLine UV Systems are in use worldwide and have been the best in UV for over 40 years. Berson have a strong focus on innovation, improving disinfection performance, system efficiency, maintenance friendliness and low total cost of ownership.

Berson is the first manufacturer to produce an 'in-line' UV unit with medium pressure lamps. The berson InLine® uses Berson MultiWave® lamps combining a wide spectrum of useful UV wavelengths with a very high energy output. This combination causes total and permanent deactivation of micro-organisms, avoiding photoreactivation.
The compact size and high energy output of the Berson MultiWave® lamps reduces the size of the irradiation chamber and quantity of lamps drastically. The "in-line" construction results in a very low headloss and small foot-print compared to conventional medium- and low-pressure UV systems.
Conventional low-pressure lamps only damage the DNA as a result of absorption of the monochromatic (254nm) wavelength. However, in general, microorganisms use a repair mechanism to get rid of UV damaged DNA.

Using berson MultiWave® lamps, with their broad band polychromatic spectrum, not only DNA is damaged but also other biomolecules are (in)direct influenced. This results in a different repair tendency compared to monochromatic low-pressure UV lamps.

Berson UV System Validation

Berson's UV systems are validated to the most stringent third party approvals, including DVGW, USEPA, JWRC, NWRI and NSF. In the case of the most internationally accepted regulations- DVGW and USEPA- our systems are validated under challenging hydraulic conditions (after a 90 degree pipe bend) using 240nm quartz sleeves to prevent potential Nitrate conversion.

Validations are regularly upgraded to allow the application of the newest lamp and ballast technology.

Considerations When Choosing a Polypropylene or Stainless Steel UV System

UltraAqua UV systems based on polypropylene (PP) material are completely corrosion resistant. They can be used in all water salinities at temperatures up 80 ºC. However, please note that the UltraAqua range of stainless steel UV reactors are made of high grade AISI316L steel which has been passivated and electropolished internally as well as externally. Corrosion resistance is very high for these as well. As a rule of thumb choose polypropylene (PP) reactors if sea water temperatures exceed 25 ºC.
