Pre-run Check Quantifies System

High Precision Segmentation

For seawater analysis the key factor in reproducibility, which is critical for detection limits, and  the composition of the liquid segments passing through the analyser. Each segment must contain the same proportion of reagent and sample, and the arrival time of each segment at the reagent injection points must be very precise.

Seal Electronic Air Injection vs. Mechnical Air Injection

SEAL AutoAnalyser achieve this high precision with electronic air injection.  The timing of the air injection is determined by a chopper wheel which intercepts a light beam, this triggers a solenoid valve to inject the air. In contrast, mechanical systems which use a cam and lever device are less accurate even when new, and the air timing becomes progressively less precise as the pump ages. With mechanical air injection the bubble precision on a typical nutrient manifold is around 2%. With electronic injection it is improved to less than 1%. On the QuAAtro39 it is 0.2%.

QuAAtro Segmented Flow Analyser Features

Microflow Technology - 1mm ID Glass

QuAAtro is a microflow system, the internal diameter of all glassware being 1mm. This reduces reagent consumption and increases throughput, with most methods running 100 – 120 samples hour. The optimal bubble frequency for each method is programmed by silent air valves to improve flow stability.

Manifolds and Detectors are Heated to 370 Degrees C

The integrated enclosed manifold and detector share the same temperature control system and are heated to 37º C. This reduces ownership cost and increases ease of use. It also means the system is not as susceptible to changes in environmental temperature. High temperature heating baths, distillation and dialyzers are available for methods that require them.

How Does Continuous Segmented Flow Analysis differ to from Flow Injection Analysis?

For automated sea water analysis methods, it's important to understand how an AutoAnalyser using the principles of air-segmented flow analysis provides advantages over flow injection analysis.

Based on the principles used in a continuous flow analyser, the SEAL Analytical segmented flow analysis system consists of an autosampler, a peristaltic pump, a chemistry manifold, a detector and data acquisition software. Sample and reagents are pumped continuously through the chemistry manifold. Air bubbles are introduced at regular intervals forming unique reaction segments which are mixed using glass coils. Glass is ideal, as it is inert, stays clean and enables easy visual checks.

In Continuous Segmented Flow Analysis, all reactions run to completion. The ratio of sample to reagents in the detector reaches a constant maximum value – the steady-state condition. This ensures maximum sensitivity resulting in lowest detection limits and exceptional reproducibility. Variations in reaction time, temperature and sample matrix do not affect the results as they do in other colorimetric techniques, such as flow injection analysis, where the reaction is not brought to completion.

Higher analysis rates and lower reagent consumption are achieved with Bubble- through-the-flowcell operation. It also makes the system easy to use. The linear range is increased for most methods by the flowcell design with planar end faces and fiber-optic coupling which ensures parallel light transmission through the flowcell.

The AA3 HR is a macroflow system, the internal diameter of all glassware being 2 mm. This enables more complex and non-homogenous sample matrices to be run without clogging. The AA3 HR  chemistry analyzer allows for long reaction times as well as the automation of on-line distillation, UV digestion and other complex procedures. Most methods run at 60-70 samples hour.
