Waste Water Disinfection with Berson UV

Berson Wastewater UV Disinfection

Thousands of wastewater sites globally use Berson UV systems. Berson wastewater UV systems are environmentally friendly with:
• Lower operational costs
• CFD design
• Bioassay validation
• Lowest number of lamps
• Smallest footprint and lowest headloss
• Highest medium pressure UV Lamp life with automatic wiping

UV systems are a well established method of wastewater disinfection safeguarding public health and protecting wildlife. Berson has more than 30 years experience in waste water disinfection. There are different types of wastewater, such as municipal sewage or industrial effluent, and these different waste waters all have their own types of microbiological environment, microbiological counts, levels of suspended solids, UV transmission rates and temperatures. Depending on whether the effluent is to be discharged into rivers, lakes and seas or re-used for applications such as irrigation, the required microbiological counts are usually specified by local regulations.
Berson UV was the first supplier in the world of closed pipe UV systems for wastewater treatment. Berson also invented the bersonInLine® concept, with all Berson InLine UV disinfection systems having the highest kill rate efficiency compared with power consumption. Berson UV also developed the Berson MultiWave® medium pressure lamp, which has a very high power consumption efficiency and which ensures no microbial no photo repair of UV-damaged DNA.
All Berson InLine UV systems are equipped with Berson MultiWave® lamps and have an optimised chamber design using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) with low head loss. They are all very compact with a small footprint, making them easy to retrofit. Electronic ballasts (stepless power supplies) enable the units to compensate for any unforeseen lower transmissions or increase in flow rates and use up to 20% less power than other energy control methods. Berson automatic wipers keep the lamps clear of fouling and the advanced UVtronic control module provides data logging and is fully programmable. Finally, the design of the Berson chambers forces the wastewater to pass perpendicularly to the UV lamps, meaning there are no 'blind spots'.
The temperature of wastewater has a significant influence on the choice of UV lamp. Medium pressure UV lamps, like the Berson MultiWave range, are not influenced by water temperature, while low pressure UV lamps have an optimum operating temperature of around 20°C, with a change in water temperature of only 5°C significantly influencing the lamp's performance. Medium pressure lamps should therefore always be used if large temperature fluctuations are expected.

Benefits of UV Disinfection for Wastewater

The most common method of wastewater disinfection for reuse has long been chlorination. Despite chlorine’s impressive track record, concerns regarding disinfection by-products (DBPs) and, more recently, disinfection performance with respect to pathogen inactivation, are driving the conversion from chlorine disinfection to other disinfection methods such as UV disinfection, which does not produce any DBPs.
Closed vessel UV disinfection systems are easy to install within existing pipework, so there is minimal disruption to plant operation. Day to day operation is simple and only minor maintenance is needed. The only regular requirement is changing the UV lamps and wiper rings once a year, a straightforward operation that can be carried out by on-site personnel.
UV systems for wastewater reuse are also validated to much higher doses than drinking water systems, according to protocols established by the National Water Research Institute (NWRI) in the USA. Drinking water type product validation, with the accompanying rigor, is emerging as the dominant method of assessing suitability for these critical applications. The ability to prevent photo repair is also key.

Two golf courses in Anthem, Arizona, are using wastewater UV disinfection by Berson for water reuse in irrigation. Founded less than 10 years ago Anthem, a town just north of Phoenix, now has a population of over 40,000. As part of its rapid expansion the town recently installed three closed chamber, medium pressure UV system from Berson UV to disinfect its wastewater. This allows the town to not only meet increased demands in its water and wastewater treatment capacity, but also to exceed the output quality standards.  more »
